Increase Laptop battery Life using Haswell processors

Intel is going to come up with a new range of processors code named as Haswell processors, that will raise the laptop battery life to 50%. The product is expected to launch on June 4 2013. The processors were designed for laptop's and tablet's and the main focus was on lower power consumption. 

The lower power consumption does not compromise on the performance and the battery life can be even extended to 20 times in idle or stand by mode. Haswell has an update to Intel's instruction set architecture. The graphics performance is improved for laptops and there will be even more performance for desktop computers Intel said.

The low power consumption is achieved by

• On chip power management unit (dynamically adjust the power consumption in various parts of the chip)
• Use of lower power circuits.
• Smaller motherboards with consolidated voltage regulators.
• Faster interactions on the chip.
• Stand by power reduction
• Power planes (Which shuts down most of the CPU transistors in stand by mode)
• Transistor leakage (Haswell uses tri-gate transistors, which can reduce the leakage by a factor of two or three)
• Minimum operating voltage

The three major forms of Haswell processors are

• Desktop processors - Haswell DT
• Mobile and Laptop version - Haswell MB
• BGA version - (Haswell H, Haswell ULT and Haswell ULX)

• 22 nm manufacturing process
• 3D tri gate transistors
• 14 stage pipeline
• Mainstream up to quad core
• Support for dual channel DDR3
• L1 cache 64 KB, L2 cache 256 KB

So, is it going to be a new challenge for other processor manufacturers?. Can we expect a laptop with a battery life of 6 to 8 hours. Let's wait and see.
